Puffles, a rare and magical camouflaged dragon, sits alone on the outskirts of town. Everyone thinks he's a bad guy just because he is so scary looking. To not scare people, Puffles spends most of his time completely invisible. He loves to play in the forest just a few miles away from the castle. Sometimes he wishes he could play with the town’s folk and be included in their many banquets.
Arjay, the prince, sits in the castle's main dining hall surrounded by many noblemen, including his father, the king . He feels ignored whenever there is trouble in town. Everyone gets so busy and he feels he may as well be completely invisible. Arjay completely neglects how dangerous the monster, Hammelton is. He doesn’t understand why no one will play with him or let him leave the castle perimeter lately.
The next morning, Arjay decides to leave the castle without telling anyone. He packs a sack of his favorite spicy snacks to eat before he comes back for lunch. He thinks to himself that no one would notice he was missing for a few hours anyway. If he explores and plays in the forest he is sure to not run into whatever monster that had been bothering the townsfolk.
Arjay is having so much fun discovering bugs and climbing trees that he forgets to eat his spicy snacks, let alone head back to the castle for lunch. After a long day of playing in the forest Arjay realizes he is lost. He does not know how to get back. The deep forest is starting to get darker and darker. Arjay becomes tired and scared.
Puffles had noticed the prince earlier in the day and was following him around curiously without the young prince noticing. When he notices that the prince staring to panic, he knows something must be wrong. Puffles inches closer and closer until he is right behind the prince. He is still too cautious to reveal himself so he stays invisible. He hopes the prince won't be freighted if he does happen to notice the giant dragon lurking behind him.
As it grows even more dark Arjay becomes even more scared. He sees something huge coming down the path toward him. Is this the Ham-something monster that the knights were reporting about? It is hard to tell with only the light of the full moon. Arjay is frozen in fear. What ever is barreling down the path is huge, hairy, and absolutely horrific.
Arjay does not know what to do. At the very last second he turns and runs with all of his strength. He is not sure where he is heading, but anywhere has to be better than getting trampled. He hears the pounding of each step behind him coming closer and closer. The fact that Arjay is extremely afraid of the dark is no longer his biggest problem; He is going to get squashed!
The giant fuzzball continues to speed faster and faster toward Arjay. Puffles knows he has to help the prince even if it means being seen. Arjay badly twists his ankle, so Puffles jumps into action. He scares both the monster and Arjay at first. Springing into action he saves the young prince. As Arjay dusts himself off, he realizes the dangerous looking dragon only means to help.
Puffles caries the limping prince to a nearby cave that they are lucky enough to find despite both being unfamiliar with the area this deep into the forest. Arjay thanks the large dragon for saving him. Then puffles lights a campfire. They wait out the night in the security of the cavern. This is the first time in almost a century that puffles became completely visible around a human. They share Arjay’s remaining spicy snacks as Arjay slowly recovers.
By the time the sun comes up the next day the king and all his knights are marching far and wide to find Arjay. He had noticed the prince’s disappearance almost immediately. He was worried sick when Arjay did not make his way to the dining hall for his favorite lunch, fried filleted chicken. They had searched the forest, hills, and mountains around the castle and villages thoroughly, but made no progress in finding Arjay’s trail.
The queen and her team of powerful wizards were also using all their enchantments trying to find the prince. They used all of the castle’s supply of goblin tears and were running low on unicorn hair. She worked tirelessly only to get a few glimpses of her poor son falling in the mud in the dark. Even with this much effort they were no closer to getting Arjay home safely.
